FAQ about Keratin Smoothing Treatments

Have you ever heard of a Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy treatment, but didn't know enough about it?  Let me tell you all about it, because if you have unruly curly or frizzy hair, it's a game changer.

What is the difference between a conventional straightening and a Keratin Smoothing Treatment?

In the 90's conventional straighteners were really big for those that wanted pin straight hair but had frizzy curl issues.  Conventional straighteners or relaxers work by breaking the protein bonds within your hair's structure.  This causes each strand to reform into a permanently straight shape.  Exactly like a permanent wave that makes your hair curly, but instead makes your hair straight.  It was a way you could get smooth shiny hair without having to spend a ton of time styling it each morning. However over time we found the hair that had been straightened became compromised, and that was something that we didn't want to continue. You won't see it right away, but maybe by the third treatment.  The hair would lose it's shine and as soon as it would grow out, you would have a line of demarcation where your straightening was and your new growth showed. That was one of the hardest things for my clients, was that regrowth.

Keratin Complex’s technology does not break the hair’s bonds. It contains high concentrations of keratin, which by the way is what your hair is made of, and when applied and flat ironed into the hair, allows it to penetrate throughout the hair structure.  The  keratin then seals inside the cortex repairing any damage your hair has while intensely conditioning your hair, which gives it the smoother healthier look that's desired. With Keratin Complex Therapy, my clients never get that hard line of demarcation.  The Keratin being an intense conditioner, wares over time.  The conditioning properties begin to diminish, allowing the hair to return to its original curl form.  The anti frizz factor however lasts longer, which is what most of my clients don't like about their curly hair.  They tell me, "It's not so much the curl I don't like, that I can handle. It's the frizz." It's not a conventional straightener.  What it does is take away the frizz and smooths your hair 4 levels.  Which means if straight hair is a 1 and curly frizzy hair is a number 10, if you have level 4 or 5 curl you will have straight hair after you wash it at home for the first time.  If you hair is a level 10, with will be a level 6 when you wash it at home for the first time. When you go to style your hair however, it will be 95% easier to get it where you want it. The keratin does not take out the body of your hair, so unlike a conventional straightener you can blow dry or curl your hair and it will stay.  It will just be smoother and shinier.

How does it work?  What can I expect?

With the KERATIN COMPLEX SMOOTHING THERAPY you can expect to be in the salon 2-3 hours.  Your hair is first clarified to remove any product buildup or oil buildup from your hair so that the Keratin can penetrate the hair to do it's job.  Your hair is completely dried, and then the Keratin Therapy Smoothing Therapy treatment is applied all over your hair in thin sections to make sure no strand is left behind.  A plastic cap is applied and the Keratin is allowed to absorb and penetrate into your hair for 20-35 minutes.  You hair is completely dried again, and then flat ironed in very thin sections. And you're done!  With the KERATIN COMPLEX SMOOTHING THERAPY treatment you cannot wash your hair, get it wet at all, sweat, wear sunglasses on the top of your head, put your hair in a tie or band, or bend it in any way for 72 hours.  Your Keratin is still curing for these 72 hours and you need to do everything to keep it in its straight state during that time.  After that you can resume your usual regimen.  This treatment runs $300 and up and lasts up to 5 months

For the EXPRESS BLOW OUT expect to be in the salon 1 1/2 hours.  Your hair is first clarified to remove any product buildup or oils buildup from your hair so that the Keratin can penetrate the hair to do it's job.  Your hair is towel dried, and then the Express Blow Out is applied all over your damp hair in sections to make sure no strand is left behind.  A cap is applied and the Keratin is allowed to absorb into your hair for 5 minutes.  You hair is completely dried, and then flat ironed in 1-2 inch sections. And you're done!  With the EXPRESS BLOW OUT treatment you also cannot wash your hair, get it wet at all, sweat, wear sunglasses on the top of your head, put your hair in a tie or band, or bend it in any way for 8 hours.  Your Keratin is still curing for these 8 hours and you need to do everything to keep it in its straight state for that time.  After that you can resume your usual regimen. This treatment runs $150 and up and lasts up to 2 months.

Who would benefit from a Keratin Smoothing Treatment?

Keratin Therapy is for all hair types.  If you have curly frizzy hair that you want smoother, or straighter hair that needs intense conditioning, then this treatment is for you.

How do I care for my Keratin Smoothing Treatment?

How long your Keratin treatment lasts can depend on how you care for it at home.  Use the products that go with the treatment.  The Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy shampoos and conditioners can be used with any line of smoothing therapy.  I love their Timeless shampoo and conditioner.  The one in the silver bottles.  They are the most conditioning and are completely sulphate free. They also contain sunscreen in them.  I recommend this duo for my clients who color their hair because it helps keep their color longer.  If you swim in a pool, the ocean, or take a jacuzzi and get your hair wet, make sure your rinse your hair well to get out the salts or chlorine.  Use a medium temperature water when shampooing and conditioning.....and that's it!  If you have any questions at all, please feel free to message me at jayne@jaynematzkinhair.com, and I will be happy to help.
